This is what Korean women are afraid of when using taxis or public bathrooms

A recent study conducted by the Gender Ministry revealed some worrying statistics on sexual violence and victim blaming.

According to the latest Sexual Violence Safety Survey, more than half of Korean women, about 51%, expressed worry about becoming victims of sexual assault when using taxis or public bathrooms alone.

Additionally, 63% of female respondents shared concerns about sexual assault or harassment when walking alone on the street late at night, while 52.9% felt uneasy about strangers visiting or knocking on their doors when they were home alone.

The study also highlighted the increasing use of digital devices in sex crimes.

9.8% of respondents reported experiencing sexual harassment involving electronic devices.

This included incidents such as receiving explicit photos or links, engaging in inappropriate conversations, impersonation leading to the sharing of explicit content and demanding illicit images and videos.

Furthermore, the survey uncovered a disturbing trend of shifting blame onto victims, not only from men but also from women.

Almost 40% of female respondents and 52.1% of male respondents agreed with the notion that “sexual violence occurs because of revealing clothing.”

Additionally, when asked about victims who were assaulted while under the influence of alcohol, 35.7% of women and 43.4% of men agreed that the victims were also responsible for what happened.

These findings shed light on the challenges that Korean women face in terms of safety and the need for a shift in societal attitudes and behaviors.
