How to get into the company of your dreams

Getting into the company of your dreams is a slightly different angle from “getting the job of your dreams,” which would be focused more so on progressive skills development. In any event, learn how to differentiate between ‘Substance’ and ‘Communication.’

Starting with ‘Communication,’ you need to understand and adopt your audience’s language. In the example for the folks at Amazon, everything is grouped by Leadership Principle:

Next, spread that across a matrix while the other axis is labelled with a ‘S T A R’ or ‘S A R I’ breakdown – ‘Situation Task Action Result’ and ‘Situation Action Result Interesting,’ respectively.

As for ‘Substance’ then, simply dissect and drop in the specifics of your examples across that glorious experience map of yours. And those don’t need to border attempts to find world peace or cure a disease. Simple process improvements with a bit of healthy pushback you needed to get through could be a start. You will very quickly see where you have gaps, where you try to BS and also develop a nice narrative flow in the meantime.

During my time at Amazon, conducting some 120+ interviews, we rarely interviewed people who did exactly that job before, but looked for people who were good problem solvers, were solution owners, were hands-on and understood the underlying specifics. Interviewing with and working at Google or SapientNitro was no different, although perhaps a little less rigidly structured (then). The biggest downfall was mostly interviewees not actually answering a question, just yapping away in an effort to desperately fill the emptiness they tried to convey, and mostly because they didn’t know their own examples. Provided you have experience (substance) under your belt, there is no reason why the mode of delivery (communication) should hold you back from kicking ass in any interview.
