A snapshot of Amiqus x UKGovcamp 2019

Saturday 19th January saw me travel down from Edinburgh for UKGovcamp. Given the length of the journey, I wasn’t too surprised that I managed to make a few wrong turns on my way to 102 Petty France…

Delight

As I was driving this morning, I was praying about the word “delight”. Delight isn’t a word I often use but I am trying to employ it. I only hear of delight in two or three small references- the Turkish delight from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, chocolate delight (a dessert), and the response when the handsome gentleman extends his hand to the rosy bachelorette for a dance…” I’d be delighted”. But otherwise, delight is an uncommon word in my vocabulary and around me.

Delight means to please someone greatly. In the etymology of the word, it means “to charm”. And one of the earliest forms of “charm” is “song”. So when we are delighted by something, a song of sweet pleasure rises up from us accompanied by an “oh!”. When I am delighted, my heart leaps and says “Oh! Oh!” Like on cane grinding day, I delighted at the idea of plopping Obed into the tractor seat like a tiny little farmer. My eyes twinkled and my cheeks rose at the vision. My little guy looked so cute! I was delighted.

Other things that delight me are aprons, beeswax candlesticks, wind chimes, air thick with the smell of supper, homemade anything, nature’s giants (trees, mountains, ocean, canyons, fields), Joshua’s dad jokes, Obed’s sweet smiles, cooler days, warm days after winter, a new project in my hands and more.

Then I thought of the response to delight or its opposite- appall. When something is delighting or appalling, I cry “oh!” When I am delighted, I want to draw close to the thing that swells song within me. When it is appalling, I have a sense of pushing away or distance. The Lord says to delight in Him and He will give you all you desire (Psalm 37:4) He also says that fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions. (Pro 18:2). So what are we drawing close to? The Lord himself or the temporary things of the world?

Another verse says that God takes delight in His people. (Psalm 149:4) He wants to come close to us! We bring Him joy and a song rises from Him! Let us delight in Him. Let us be a generation of women revived to smile, gasp, and beam at the joy of the Lord. It will make us strong and steadfast. (Psalm 37:23, Neh 8:10)
