Perception

Life is all about the way that we perceive things. In The Great Gatsby, and “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” it is specifically how both Gatsby and Prufrock perceive their relationship with women. Gatsby thinks that having a relation ship with Daisy should be simple, but went Gatsby tells Daisy to tell her husband that she never loved him she is hesitant because she is about to change her whole life with those words. So, when she does not do this he is confused and becomes slightly depressed for a short time.

In “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” the narrator is always procrastinating about anything that has to do with talking to women. He always uses the excuse that “there will be a time” for him to talk to girls and do all the things that are outside of his normal routine. However, he never does talk to any girls or do the things that he wants to so he ends up never ‘getting the girl’ and is lonely for the rest of his life.

In “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” one of the lines is “prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet”. This is referring to the fake personalities that many people had in the early 20th century when talking to different people. People usually did this in order to fit in to several different social groups so that they could have more friends.

Does this still happen today? I think that I usually (if not always) behave the same way all the time no matter who I am with. However, now in the 21st century people still do act like completely different people depending on who they’re around (usually with friends at school). So yes people do still “prepare a face to meet the faces that [they] meet”.
