I Love Saturdays When Young People of Color Run the World

And I wish they were in charge every day.

A few weeks ago I had a busy Saturday. I was getting my first vaccine. Now I get it but didn’t at first. 5:00 pm and I needed to stock up since I didn’t know how woozy I’d feel after the shot.

At every place I stopped, the person in charge was under 25.

You know what? They are excellent at their jobs. I got clear directions and answers to all my questions.

My 98-year-old mother might be frail, but she is particular about food. That’s why I used the drive-through to get coffee and a chicken sandwich. She loves anything with mayonnaise.

That “Have a nice day” from the young clerk at the window helps me stay upbeat when I attend to my mother’s needs.

Then, I returned home to change into my interview uniform: turtleneck, nice jeans, new N95 mask.

I’ve been visiting Mom & Pop groceries for a work project that starts this summer. My job was to hang up job recruitment flyers.

We are conducting interviews with visitors to county parks and need people who speak Vietnamese, Karen, or Hmong.

The Ha Tien grocery was busier than I’d ever seen it when it was a chain grocery store. All the check-out lines were 4 to 9 carts deep.

I was in and out of that store in 10 minutes. The staff were wonderful and gave me tape for the flyers before going back to their duties. I expected a bulletin board and came with push pins.

Their staff holds the line.

The cart clerk wouldn’t let me sneak out the wrong way. I had to exit the store like everybody else.
