Could I have been the Woman in the Window
Gawking at you, gawking at me?
The reflection in the glass is you
Stare and walk by
Trip on the cobblestone
Laugh at your drunken solitude

Do not just stare, Honey
Come in and take some tea
Finest in this city
Oh the ways of love
We’ll get to that
Unless of course
You are here for something
Else
Absinthe is down the street

Could I have been the Mixer in the Tavern
A cat grin for you, a cat grin for me?
The difference between us
A ledge just for leaning
A clinking of glasses
A watcher’s celebration

Get the Fire
Flavor’s divine
Sit on the velvet in the back
In case you wake the dead
They’re wild tonight, Dear
Sip slowly, now
Careful on the steps

Could I have been the Spirit Upstairs
Winding staircase behind you, you slip past me?
Pulse quickening
A breath on your shoulder
A narrowing hall

These canals have held ages
Fistfuls of language
I am a jumbled old man
And a honeymooned child
A lister of yearnings
Questions and travels
Just a short staying tenant
Quiet now.
Watch for the mirror.
See me?
