Chapter Twenty-Two

Sally climbed up the stairs. The hard work of the past several days must have strengthened her muscles, as she carried Wendy to the top floor without much difficulty.

Then she heard an explosion. Screams from below echoed through the stairwell.

Sally set Wendy down on the landing outside the door to Big Baby’s private chamber, comforting her as best she could, but there wasn’t much she could do.

Sally pressed her ear to the door. “I hear the television, but that’s it.”

Wendy pulled a small set of keys from her pocket. “Try these,” she mumbled.

“Keys? Where did you get them?”

“I picked Ms. Elle’s pocket when I grabbed her to beg for mercy.”

“Nice.”

Sally opened the door and propped Wendy up as they went inside.

Big Baby’s private chamber was as plush and regal as described in orientation. In fact, it was the nicest living space she had ever seen, in spite of the mess scattered across the floor.

It was so messy that Sally worried she wouldn’t be able to see Kitty.

“What do you want?” Big Baby said. He was on his bed at one end of the chamber. Above the bed, hanging from the ceiling, was a television. On the ceiling was a mirror.

“Oh, uh…”

Big Baby scrutinized Sally. “Did you bring my bottle? All this noise woke me from my nap and I’m thirsty.”

“Ms. Elle told me to come up here and get Kitty.”

“What for?”

“Because of the fire. She didn’t want you to worry about her.”

Big Baby shrugged. “Fine.” Big Baby roused himself from the bed, rolling to one side and sliding off, then pressing against the bed to stand up.

“This is all my stuff,” Big Baby said. “So don’t take anything. In fact, don’t touch anything.”

“I’ll just get Kitty and go.”

This chamber seemed to take up the entire top floor. At one end was the large bed, a toilet, and a bath. At the other end was a large television, a sofa, and a rocking chair. And scattered in between were hundreds…
