The Genie and the Wish

A Free Verse Poem

Inspired by a simple act of kindness

You and I —
we’ve read stories
from the Arabian Nights
and sometimes, we even dream,
albeit, secretly — of having a genie.

Living a fantasy is fantastic,
I very well know.
But it’s not real,
not worthy of aspiring — I used to think.
The genie and the lamp,
wishes fulfilled for free — all seemed fictitious.

But, magic is mysterious —
It can surprise you,
out of thin air.
To believe,
you need to witness it live —
The spell, doing its spectacular trick.

Disney’s Genie was blue as he could fly,
but this one walks on the sand, and so he is brown.
Oblivious of his genie powers,
he was back on his bike, on a typical day.
Little did he know —
That he holds the keys to grant someone’s wish.

Only a few feet away,
stood a shy security guy —
Who protects the place,
while everyone sleeps.
A bit empty on his pockets,
but he was full of hopes and dreams.

Hearing the familiar beats
of his dream bike,
he hoped to fulfill
one long desire to ride
this sexy beast —
But for this, he’d need the keys.

And so he did —
Breaking the shell of his shyness,
the guard came out to the genie.
Seeking the keys —
Wishing his innocent desire,
to drive this beauty, just once for a bliss.

Genies are creatures of power,
but they also hold an inner kindness.
Without losing a second,
The wish was granted —
Keys were tossed at once,
and he rode on his way to happiness — saying Hurray!.
